One Photo | Sunrise in the Peruvian Amazon, Peru.

It was dark in the hut when I woke up, very early. That was my second day in the Peruvian Amazon, and the day ahead would be filled with activities. Because of the heat, in this part of the world you go out exploring at dawn, come back for a rest, and go back out in the evening. So I grabbed my headlamp, opened the mosquito net, and jumped from the bed.

A couple of minutes later I was out walking to the lodge jetty on the margins of the Yarapa River, one of the many streams that flow into the Amazon, to meet my guide and catch my boat for the morning journey. I immediately noticed that the sky and clouds had started to gain some glorious colors, but all around it was still dark.

When I reached the dock my camera was still in the bag, but the sky was reflecting on the water and turning everything pink.

I heard a local boat approaching and reached out quickly to grab the camera. It was fast and I didn’t have much time to think about settings, but I tried to compose with the horizon on the upper third so the river occupies the central part of the frame. The diagonal lines of the river and the ripples of the water lead the viewer to the boat. It was 5:45 a.m. but totally worth it; you don’t get this light at 10:00 a.m. In the end, I am glad that I had the camera ready to go to capture this moment, and now I can share it.

This image was shot with the Fuji X-T1 and the Fujinon XF 16-55mm F 2.8 R LM WR. Post was done entirely in Lightroom where I boosted contrast, increased vibrancy, and dodged some of the areas in the margin of the river to gain some detail there.
