Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Photos

While taking photos in Dubai last January, I made a day trip to Abu Dhabi. Although the city deserves a visit on its own, the main reason I went was to see and try to photograph the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Wanting to establish a structure that would unite cultural diversity along with historical and modern values, the late president of United Arab Emirates, Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, envisioned the largest place of worship in the UAE. The resulting structure is truly spectacular. The mosque is large enough to accommodate over forty-thousand worshippers.

Artisans and materials from many countries and thousands of workers participated of the construction. This mosque has been on my bucket list for a long time and I am very glad I visited it. I spent the afternoon and well into the night wandering the many hallways and sections. I was in awe of the level of craftsmanship, materials and impressive dimensions of the building. On the day I went the mosque was packed with visitors, and one section was under renovation or maintenance, which was a bummer, however the good thing is that it is a “photographer friendly” place – tripods are allowed, and you can photograph as much as you want.
