So, I know I haven’t post a lot lately, but I was really swamped with some assignments and commercial work, mostly for my real estate virtual tours that you can see in HD VIRTUALS.

As a remedy I am planning to start posting also some of that work here also in the blog, so I’ll have mixed stuff, personal work and travels as well outtakes from assignments as well.

Anyways, here you can see a slideshow that I’ve forced myself to finish for a presentation in my local camera club “SFCC“, that compiles some of the images that I most like of my trip to Eastern Europe last March. The photos were taken in period time of 10 days covering, Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest. It was really an amazing trip.

I’ll keep posting individual images of the trip in future posts, along with more information and details.

Enjoy the slideshow and feel free to leave comments.

So, I went to Nassau in The Bahamas once again, this time for business, I believe this is the 4th time this year and I set to go back at least twice more before the end of 2010.

The good thing of traveling several times to the same place is that once you photographed all the iconic locations a couple of times you start to try to go off to places that are not usually seen or discovered by the occasional tourist.

I’ve discovered this location passing by in a taxi, I saw the old walls from the street and I asked where I was and they told me “ohhh this is St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church, I think it is the oldest church in Nassau…” dam.. The place is walking distance from downtown, so I arranged to go back the following day in the afternoon.

I found out that this church was built by the Spanish in the 1600′s, I got there around 6 PM, and nobody was around, only a couple of friendly locals doing the yard, so I started to shoot the exterior without any problems, soon the Pastor came in and opened the church, they were having lectures that night, so I asked if I could photograph the interior and he immediately accepted.

I’ve taken all the photos here with the Nikon D300 and the Sigma 10-20 mm, a lens that I love for this type of shoots and that has proven to give me amazing wide angle pictures every time I’ve used it. Most brackets here are 9 exposures, and I post processed the photos using the new HDR Efex Pro from Nik Software and fine tuned in Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

I hope you like the photos, let me know… if you can. In the meantime, I have yet to see what other historic landmark I’ll photograph when I get back to Nassau in just 2 weeks.

About 4 weeks ago I went to the Railroad Museum, here in Miami. I really loved the place; there are plenty of possibilities and awesome shoot opportunities. The subject was ideal to try some HDR, like always I use HDR to try to show the image in a more realistic way trying to capture a wider dynamic range and detail. That realistic look helps me to show the images the way I feel it when I was there. So, this is the gallery that contains some of my favorite pictures of that day, enjoy…

Last sunday I had the opportunity to shoot the FARA races, here in the Miami-Homestead Speedway. FARA (Formula and Automobile Racing Association) is an organization of auto racing that is primarily for amateurs or beginner drivers that will be compete with more experienced pilots in different classes.

This was my first time shooting a motor-sports event, so I learned a lot and had fun, one of the most challenging situations besides that the cars really go fast!!!, was the climate, it was pouring almost the whole day, so I tried to keep my gear as dry as possible using just plastic bags, fortunately it worked fine.

The gear I used was my Nikon D300, with the 80-400 and the 24-70, and I also carried a Gitzo monopod that was very useful for the bigger lens.

Earlier in the morning I concentrated in the boxes and garages, there are plenty of opportunities there for good images, as I was trying to gather as much as I can to help me tell the history, I also focused in drivers and technicians. Then went down to the track to try some panning and action shots.

Here is a gallery of the shots I most like from that day, it was fun and I’m looking forward to do it again…

During the past 60 days I went to Nassau in the Bahamas twice, family vacation the first one, and then work….

Needless to say my camera was always with me, but I’ve decided to travel light and just brought with me the Nikon 18-200 VR and the Sigma 10-20 mm in both occasions.

Man, what a great place!!! Nassau has it all, from perfect sandy beaches, to the most impressive luxury resorts. I leave you with some of the pictures I most liked, and I really hope to get back there soon, with more time to shoot.

That’s all for now folks, more to come soon, in the meantime get out there and shoot something…

Just brought with me the Nikon 70-200 2.8, as primarily wanted to do some portraits and didn’t want to be changing lens there in the beach.

Quite interesting subjects and characters, beyond the windy-sandy day… I came back with some interesting pictures, from fortunetellers, magicians, pirates, to falcons and owls.

I am pretty sure I’ll go back to the one in Deerfield Beach, which starts February 13th, for information on the festival, just click here.

I started contributing to microstock photo agencies about a year ago, I tried other outlets before that, none of them worked for me, or maybe, I was not patient enough to see the results.

I was also really skeptical to license my images for such tinny prices, in some cases for cents, but a great friend of mine, who doesn’t like to be mentioned, encouraged me to do it, so I decided to give it a try. The main idea behind this venture was to find a way to supplement my income and to help pay my gear.

Back then; I decided to go the non-exclusive route so I would have more opportunities and different distribution channels. During this year I’ve managed to build an average portfolio of about 1000 images in those agencies.

I still have a lot to learn but so far here is a snapshot of the most popular agencies and how they worked for me in none particular order:

iStockphoto: This is the agency that started the microstock model 10 years ago, this site is now my 2nd earner even do my portfolio there is really small compared with the other sites, so this really shows the potential on this agency. One of the major drawbacks I found is the upload limit for new and non-exclusive contributors, making it very hard to build a strong portfolio, also the inspection is tough here and the uploading process is one of the most cumbersome in the industry, however they are very popular among buyers and due to higher prices revenue is great, even with the low commissions offered. iStockphoto really worth’s a try, just don’t expect immediate results, you can follow them on twitter @istockhelp, sign up or learn more here.

Dreamstime: This agency is also one of my top picks, is now fluctuating between number 2 or 3 every month. In my experience pictures do better as they age here, and their commission structure is one of the best in the industry, offering between 30 and a 50% split while exclusive photographs gets an extra 15%. In this site you can also license Editorial and Newsworthy content. I also like their level system where images get a higher price as they become more popular in sales further boosting the income. The uploading and submission process is really fast and the inspection process fair. A solid and steady earner for me, I’ll continue to contribute to this agency, you can follow them on twitter @dreamstime and you can join and learn more here.

Fotolia: I like Fotolia, however the revenue generated was very inconsistent for me during this first year, having some good months and other very bad ones compared to other sites. The commission structure for non-exclusive contributors goes from 25% to 46% and depends on your ranking, the ranking gets measured by number of files sold. The uploading process is easy, however I found the submission a bit tedious by having to manually have to select the most relevant keywords at the beginning to indicate the ones you consider of higher relevance for the search results. Inspectors here are not easy and I seem to have issues getting approval in general landscape and travel photos, being the most common rejection “Your photograph did not reach our desired level of aesthetic quality”, that for me doesn’t mean really anything, and the funny part is that the ones I manage to get approved are ending up being good sellers, I don’t have any problems getting lifestyle, people, food or object images approved. Some contributors are claiming getting their best growth rate in Fotolia this year, for me is just good enough to keep contributing and growing my portfolio, you can follow fotolia in twitter @fotoliausa and learn more or contribute here.

Shutterstock: This is so far my favorite and number one seller agency since day one. Because of their business model sometimes is not considered a Microstock agency, as they offer primarily a subscription model that allows and encourage buyers to download up to 25 images per day. Some contributors fail and encounter problems to get accepted but you can turn to the forums for advice before submitting, there is a great community there willing to help. The uploading process is really simply and I don’t have problems with inspection in most cases they are fair and accurate, I also find the administrators very contributor-friendly as they respond in a timely manner to each inquiry with a personalized response. I also really like the way they present statistics, very easy and simple. Portfolios here benefits of the fact that newly submitted images are ranked higher, thus having more visibility and exposure to buyers, and if an image sells well it stays there for a longer time. Being a subscription based site they only pay a fixed price per image sold that ranges between 0.25 to 0.38 depending on your total revenue earned, they also have On Demand subscriptions that pays between 0.81 to 2.70 per licensed image and an Enhanced License option for $ 28.00; the revenues produced by this site are primarily produced by the significantly higher download rate and the exposure every photo in your portfolio gets. This agency is in the top of the market and I’ll continue to contribute, you can follow them in twitter @shutterstock and get more information or sign up here.

StockXpert: This is another agency were I am getting an inconsistent performance; the site is now part of Getty Images as it was bought out during 2009. The uploading process is simple with a limit of 25 a day for submissions. I have here my largest portfolio, with almost no rejections is one of the easiest ones to get past inspection, however since the Getty take over things have tightened up a bit more. They pay 50% commission and 0.30 for subscription and partner sites. Big bulk of the sales were used to come from Photos.com subscriptions, but Getty cancelled that and changed it for iStockphoto contributors, so sales here are in the decline. Getty promised a new site for selling subscriptions in early 2010 but at this point nobody can tell how well this site will continue to perform. With all and all, I think its worth for me to continue to contribute as I have a big portfolio here, you can sign up or get more information here.

BigStockPhoto: This site goes on the lower end as far as earnings, Shutterstock recently bought them out and there are great expectations of what the new ownership will do in terms of marketing and promoting the site. Their uploading and submission process is fairly easy and the inspection fair, they don’t accept nudity content, but they accept editorial and newsworthy images. They offer a 50% commission making it an attractive channel. I think this agency should be part of any non-exclusive microstocker alternative and I’ll continue to contribute here. You can follow them on twitter @bigstockphoto or register here.

123RF: This agency is considered among the big 6, however I didn’t have great success selling here, total earnings goes to the bottom every month. I don’t have any complaints about this site, in fact I believe they have one of the easiest submission processes in the market. They offer a 50% commission structure. Effortless submission and having an extra channel generating revenue are the main reason I’ll continue contributing to this site, you can follow them on twitter @123rf or sign up here.

Other outlets: I am also contributing to Veer Marketplace and Vivozoom, but I don’t have a formed opinion yet, I am just uploading there when I have time and I am in watch and see mode.

As far as keeping myself informed about industry news and advice I follow microstockgroup.com, microstockdiaries.com and mystockphoto.org.

In conclusion, I know that microstock is not going to make me rich, the industry is becoming more and more competitive with new contributors coming every day. Traditional stock photographers are also now coming more and more adding really high quality content. I believe that early adopters/contributors are enjoying the benefits of jumping first on the boat and those that managed to have big portfolios are making the difference. For the rest of us, microstock is a viable option to generate extra income, but it takes time and effort, like everything. I love photography and for me is also fun, my goal for 2010 is to double my portfolio size across the board with more quality content and keep enjoying this great community.

That’s all for now folks, more to come soon, in the meantime get out there and shoot something…

Nik Software just released version 2.0 of Viveza, a very powerful tool that let you selectively modify and edit images using their exclusive UPoint control technology to select the areas you want to edit.

U Point control point technology is the reason I’ve been using the Viveza older version, because the easiness of use and ability to build “behind the scenes” layer masks by simply adding a point on the part of the image you want to edit, then adjust the size of the area by simply dragging a slider, beyond that Viveza will affect only the pixels in the area that are similar to the one you selected. This allow enhance the saturation, contrast and brightness of an image very quickly, selectively and without the pain of building complex masks.

The Viveza 2 is even greater, as incorporates more powerful controls and is even faster than the previous version, so what is new:

New, Interface with Global Image Adjustments: Now you can also globally apply any brightness, contrast, saturation and structure (more on this below) very quickly before start applying changes to specific areas, giving you an overall better starting point, it also incorporates a levels and curves window to have more control over contrast and tonality.

New, Structure Adjustment: I really love this one, as you can bring or reduce details between edges, this can be very used to reduce blemishes in skin, or to accentuate textures in skies, grass or any other textured part of the image.

New, Shadow Adjustment: This new feature comes very handy when you need to recover detail from shadow areas, it works pretty much like Highlights and Shadows in Photoshop or Lightroom, but you can easily use it selectively in specific areas by using a control point.

New, Warmth Adjustment: With this new feature you can cool or warm the overall look of the image, or you can also use the control points to adjust any part of it.

New, Grouping the Control Points: In my opinion this is one of the most nice improvements, as you can now group a series of control points through the image and make adjustments all at once, instead of one by one as before. This is really great for images with big variation of tones.

If you are a Photoshop user you’ll like the smart filter support and selective brush tool. Layer masks are automatically created so you can use the selective brush tool to apply any filter or correction selectively.

Viveza works with Apple Aperture, Photoshop and Lightroom, and it’s very easy to install. During the installation the software will look the applications that you have and will allow you to install it in all of them all once.

I just downloaded the upgrade today and I can tell you that, as with the previous version, this one will be in my list of preferred tools because it’s very precise and easy to use.

Here is an example image, before and after, it just took me about 4 minutes to enhance it, I edited the image directly from the Lightroom plug in, and I am pretty sure once I become more familiar with the new features this will be even faster.

You can buy the full version of Viveza 2.0 for $ 199.95 or upgrade for $ 99.95 by clicking here.

That’s all for now folks, more to come soon, in the meantime get out there and shoot something…
