In this book she describes with detail all aspects of the microstock industry, and what’s the best approach to convert your images into dollars.

The book is very well written and designed, easy to understand and read with tons of good information, including what sell and what doesn’t, she also covers the most popular themes, working with models, keywording, model and property releases and all the legalese needed to work in the industry.

In sum, this is a great book to anyone who wants to start in the complex but fun world of microstock, but also great for people already producing stock, because contains plenty of great ideas and information.

But with the time they have introduced more and more tools, and today I use it almost every day as part of my workflow.

Photoshelter is a very powerful tool, that not only host my galleries, but also seamlessly integrates with my blog and helps me to distribute my images among the different microstock agencies I contribute with just one click, and also provides an outlet to license my images and sell prints direct.

One of the things that I really like is the ability to integrate with other platforms, it provides different ways to publish and showcase my work, I can easily embed pictures or galleries with slideshows into all social media networks with just one click, and integrates very well with wordpress, but there is more…. they have a full integration with Graph Paper Press and Visual Society for creating photography blogs and websites, in fact this blog is running on that platform and it really works like a charm. You can check my galleries in other posts, but just as an example I posted on this one a gallery with my favorite pictures, a project I recently started, where I am planning to ad frequent posts with my favorite pictures and at the same time embed a gallery containing all of them.

This website also helps me to license my images direct, but in order for this to happen it is important to count with a system that properly catalog and works well with all SEO techniques so my pictures can be found, Photoshelter does that and much more, as their team is fully committed to help photographers to market their images direct, so they also provide educational tools and studies to support us. I have a very small portfolio compared with other photographers but even with that, I managed to license images and sell prints using Photoshelter directly to end users.

As I mentioned before I use Photoshelter for different applications, and beyond licensing my images direct to customers I also use it for distribute my images among all the sites I am a contributor. I just discovered this option not too long ago… and gosh that it saves time…, as I have now to upload my files just once, and from there using an FTP export option I can upload to all the different sites very quick and preserving all the IPTC data intact. So my workflow is more or less like this…

I first export the images direct from my Lightroom catalog direct to my PA (Photoshelter Archive) account; I can do this via a plug in that works very well. I do this every day as soon as I finish editing all the images, I upload them to my PA.

I then place all the images that I know are going to my microstock agencies in a temporary folder so I can easily identify them.

Once I am done and I have a batch ready I simply choose the Export via FTP option and a new window with all the presets I have there appears asking me to select the ones I am going to export. I check them all and the process begins.

A new window opens showing the progress of all the transmissions, and in a matter of minutes I can start submitting those images for approval.

Una gran herramienta para comercializar y distribuir mis fotos.

Hace ya un tiempo que estoy utilizando Photoshelter, al principio como una forma de archivar mis imagines y para poder montar galerias online rápida y fácilmente.

Pero con el tiempo ellos han introducido cada vez mas y mas opciones, y hoy en día se ha convertido en parte esencial de mi rutina de trabajo.

Photoshelter, es una herramienta muy poderosa, que mas allá de presentar mis galerías, se integra sin ningún problema con mi blog, y al mismo tiempo me ayuda a distribuir muy fácilmente las fotos a través de las diferentes agencias de microstock a las cuales contribuyo, y también funciona como una fuente adicional para poder licenciar mis fotos en forma directa y vender reproducciones.

Una de las cosas que mas me gustan es la habilidad de integración con otras plataformas, ya que provee varias formas diferentes de mostrar y publicar mi trabajo. El sistema me permite incluir galerías y slideshows, en toda las aplicaciones sociales, y se integra perfectamente con wordpress, pero hay mas… ellos ofrecen una integración total con Graph Paper Press y Visual Society para crear blogs y websites de fotografía, de hecho este blog funciona sobre esa plataforma y realmente funciona bien.

Este servicio también me ayuda a licenciar las imágenes en forma directa, pero para poder hacer eso, es muy importante contar con un método de catálogos e indexación que trabaje en forma adecuada con todas las técnicas de optimización de buscadores, para que las fotos puedan ser encontradas. Photoshelter puede hacer eso y mucho mas, ya que el equipo de trabajo esta totalmente comprometido a ayudar a los fotógrafos a licenciar imágenes en forma directa, proveyendo además soporte permanente y material educacional. Mi portfolio es bien pequeño comparado con otros, sin embargo he logrado, utilizando este servicio vender licencias y reproducciones a clientes en forma directa.

Como mencione anteriormente, utilizo Photoshelter para diferentes aplicaciones, y otra de ellas es la distribución de las imágenes entre los sitios a los cuales contribuyo. Esta función la descubrí recientemente, y realmente agiliza el trabajo, ya que ahora solo tengo que subir los files una sola vez, y desde allí puedo exportar a los diferentes sitios preservando toda la información contenida en el IPTC intacta. Así que ahora mi rutina de trabajo es mas o menos de la siguiente manera.

Lo primero es exportar las imágenes directamente desde Lightroom a mi cuenta (Photoshelter Archive) PA. Esto lo hago en forma diaria o cada vez que termino de editar las fotos a través de un plugin. Este es un proceso bien directo y sencillo.

Luego coloco estas fotos en una carpeta temporaria junto a todas las imágenes ya se de antemano voy a exportar a las diferentes agencias de microstock.

Una vez que tengo un conjunto de fotos listas, simplemente elijo la opción “Export via FTP” y se abre una nueva ventana donde puedo seleccionar cuales son los sitios a los que quiero exportar. Una vez seleccionados el proceso comienza.

Una nueva ventana se abre mostrando el progreso de todas las transmisiones, y en cuestión de minutos ya puedo comenzar con el proceso de envio para aprobación en las diferentes agencias.

En suma, Photoshelter es una gran herramienta para fotógrafos, y la verdad es que ofrece tantas opciones que es casi imposible describir en detalle todas en un blog, pero te recomiendo que las pruebes vos mismo haciendo clic aquí.

I know HDR it’s a very controversial subject among photographers, just mention it in any forum and you’ll have very intense discussions. If you look around for HDR images, generally speaking, you’ll find and overuse of the technique with big tendencies to a hyper-realistic, weir-dish look, but this is not always the case.

I believe that beyond any controversy, in certain situations, this technique can make a photograph stand out by displaying a wider tonal range, helping to reveal more details in the shadows and highlights, thus, achieving a more realistic and vivid look.

The key factor here is to stay away from the “special effect” look, and just create a natural image, there are several ways to approach it but this is what worked for me:

Tripod: I always use a tripod, no matter what, and also put my camera in mirror up mode, this prevent of almost any camera shack.

Exposure: I always shoot in RAW, 5 bracketed shots, usually 1 stop apart, and I expose to the right, or for the highlights, being carefully of have enough information and details in the shadows and highlights, and covering the full dynamic range of the scene. This is one of the most important parts, because if you don’t have enough information in the highlights you’ll end up with noisy images, especially in the dark and shadow areas.

Tone Mapping: I use Photomatix Pro, to combine and generate the HDR and then tone-map the shot, I do it directly from the RAW files, then in the “Details Enhancer” panel I just play with the strength slider and set smooth to low, I don’t touch saturation or contrast here because Photomatix is not good at it. Then I save the image as a TIFF, at that point I still have a very flat and dull image with no contrast, but that’s OK.

Final Touch: I get the image into Lightroom and make the final touches by adding contrast, black, and clarity, I also play with vibrancy and use saturation in only some selective channels. If needed I go to Photoshop for final touch up, and use Dfine, by Nik Software to eliminate noise where needed. So pretty much these last steps are very similar to my standard post-processing workflow.

It took me some time, trials and errors to discover what was the best way to get HDR images with a real look, and if you want to get those images to sell and get accepted in all the major sites, they need to look real and not overdone, soon you’ll discover that a properly processed HDR image has great potential to be a big seller in your port.

Incrementá tus ingresos de Microstock con fotos HDR

Las imagines HDR (Alto rango dinámico) pueden tener un gran potencial de aumentar tus ingresos en sitios de microstock, de hecho algunas de mis imágenes mas vendidas son HDR.

Sé que este es un tema muy delicado entre algunos fotógrafos, con solo mencionar la palabra HDR en algunos foros es suficiente para desatar discusiones acaloradas. Es que en general, si buscas imágenes de este tipo lo que vas a encontrar son fotos donde la técnica es abusada, con tendencias a un look súper hiper-realistico, raro y de mal gusto, pero no siempre tiene que ser así.

Yo creo que mas allá de cualquier controversia, y en ciertas situaciones, esta técnica puede ser aplicada para lograr un rango dinámico mas amplio, que permita mostrar mas detalle tanto en las sombras como en las luces, y de esta manera conseguir una imagen mas viva y real.

La clave para esto es evitar el look de “efecto especial” y concentrase en crean una foto que se vea mas natural, hay varias formas de lograr esto, pero esto es lo que mejor ha funcionado para mi.

Trípode: Siempre uso trípode, en cualquier situación, y también pongo el setting de mi cámara en “mirror lock up” (espejo arriba) para de esta manera evitar cualquier movimiento de la cámara.

Exposición: Siempre saco las fotos en RAW, 5 fotos con Auto-Bracketing (horquillado) con una diferencia de un stop (EV) entre una y otra toma. Siempre expongo la imagen hacia la derecha del histograma, es decir para las luces, teniendo mucho cuidado de tener suficiente información tanto en las sombras como en las luces, y cubriendo todo el rango dinámico de la escena. Esta es una de las partes mas importantes, ya que si no se cuenta con la información suficiente, especialmente en las luces, podes terminar con una imagen que tenga mucho ruido, sobre todo en las sombras.

Tone Mapping: El programa que utilizo es Photomatix Pro, para combinar las imágenes y luego hacer Tone Mapping, siempre combino las imágenes en forma directa del archivo RAW, luego en el panel de “Details Enhancer” solo muevo el filtro de intensidad “Strenght” y el de “Smooth” que controla el valor de luminosidad para disminuir los halos. Luego solo guardo la imagen como TIFF, no toco saturación, o contraste aquí, ya que Photomatix no produce buenos resultados. Entonces, por ahora solo tengo una imagen chata, con poco contraste y claridad pero esta bien por ahora.

Toque Final: Para terminar importo la imagen dentro de Lightroom, y le hago los ajustes finales, introduciendo contraste, negro, claridad y saturación en forma selectiva utilizando canales cuando es necesario. En ocasiones exporto la foto a Photoshop para los retoques finales y utilizo Dfine de Nik Software para eliminar ruido si es necesario. Es decir que esta ultima parte es muy parecida a mi proceso estándar.

Me llevó cierto tiempo, pruebas y errores, para poder descubrir la mejor forma de obtener imágenes HDR que tengan un look real. Esta es la única manera de que esas imágenes sean aceptadas en las agencias de microstock, deben verse reales. Pero sobre todo, pronto podrás descubrir que una imagen HDR bien procesada tiene gran potencial de venderse muy bien dentro de tu portafolio.
